At least thirteen people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
